Reno Family Court Judge Charles "Chuck" Weller made national headlines when a 45-year old father of three shot him in the chest with a rifle while Judge Charles Weller was in the courthouse two blocks away. The shooter, Darren Roy Mack, was outraged with the way Judge Charles Weller had decided his child support/visitation case. Judge Charles Chuck Weller survived the shooting. Darren Roy Mack's lawyers asserted an insanity defense against the attempted murder charges involving Judge Chuck Weller.
Judge Charles Chuck Weller had gained a reputation for being despotic and insensitive to the plight of families coming before the family court, particularly fathers. Many litigants described the judge as "Hitler", a "bully", "abusive" and even one litigant named him "the worst judge in America". Other litigants believed he suffered from "God-complex" and labeled him a "monster".
During Darren Roy Mack's trial, a witness testified about the outrageous judicial abuse Judge Weller heaped on litigants before his court. Judge Charles "Chuck" Weller was the worst-rated family court judge in his county.
